All About Retailers
Retailers
Most factory-built homes are sold through retail sales centers, many of which are
independently owned and operated. Others are owned and operated by a manufacturer.
In some states, you may also buy from a factory-built home community owner, developer,
or if you're purchasing a previously owned home, a real estate agent.
Retailers can offer a variety of products and services, which may include:
- Helping you choose your home and its features.
- Placing a custom order with the factory.
- Coordinating the delivery and installation of your home.
- Providing warranty service. Ask what warranty coverage the retailer provides on
transportation and installation and get it in writing.
- Arranging for financing and insurance.
- Locating personal property for sale.
- Locating rental communities with space available.
Because there is a factory-built home for nearly every lifestyle and budget,
home retailers encourage you to look at as many homes as possible. The homes are
already built and available for you to walk through. Having an actual model at a
retailer's site makes it easy to see if a home fits with your needs. As when you
are purchasing a car, your comfort level with a particular model goes up once you
have taken it for a test drive. You can "test drive" your new factory-built home
with the same confidence.
How to choose a retailer
Once you have located a number of retailers in your area, you should carefully
select one that is reputable and can provide you with a high level of service and
satisfaction. There are several good ways to choose a retailer:
- Ask existing homeowners for recommendations.
- Contact your state manufactured housing association for the names and addresses
of manufacturers and retailers in your area.
- Check out a potential retailer with your local Better Business Bureau and state
or local consumer protection agency. They'll tell you if they have any unresolved
consumer complaints on file.
